Day 1: Social Network With and Without Technology: William Kist

1.  Thoreau’s scolding of members of society of his time follows a pattern that has existed throughout history whenever new technology has come along.  Has there been a time when you have scolded or been scolded for using some new technology?

It seems like the issues with technology are either about student safety or sustainability. Both of these issues are serious and should be looked at when considering a new technology venture. However, it seems like many new ideas are ruled out before being given a chance. In regards to student safety, I think much of that is in the hands of the classroom teacher. Firewalls and Filters will only block so much out. Tech-savvy students find ways around blocks and often share this information with other students. It seems like there are many potentials for technological applications, and we are warned to not even try them out! There are many great, free ways to motivate students and get them involved in a new way with what they are learning and to share ideas.

I guess teachers and administrators have to embrace that technology is part of our world and part of our students' world from a very young age, which is very different from the way we grew up. Indeed, most teachers and administrators know this as they use technology for various purposes themselves. We need to help teachers understand how technology impacts student motivation, assists in modern communication and sharing of ideas, and creates a new text to be understood and used by our students in their lives.
